Salinity effects on protein content, lipid peroxidation, pigments, and proline in Paulownia imperialis (Siebold & Zuccarini) and Paulownia fortunei (Seemann & Hemsley) grown in vitro Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Ayala-Astorga,Gloria Irma; Alcaraz-Meléndez,Lilia.
We evaluated the effects of saline stress on soluble proteins, lipid peroxidation (TBAR), chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, β-carotene, violaxanthin, and proline in Paulownia imperialis and Paulownia fortunei plants grown in vitro. When the propagated plants reached a determined size, they were transferred aseptically to WPM culture medium containing different sodium chloride concentrations (0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 160 mM) and were sampled at 15 and 30 days. Proline content was determined at 30 days after transfer only. Protein concentration significantly decreased with the highest salt levels in P. imperialis compared to controls in which no sodium chloride was added. In both P. imperialis and P. fortunei, lipid peroxidation significantly increased at...

Antiproliferative Activity of Cyanophora paradoxa Pigments in Melanoma, Breast and Lung Cancer Cells ArchiMer
Baudelet, Paul-hubert; Gagez, Anne-laure; Berard, Jean-baptiste; Juin, Camille; Bridiau, Nicolas; Kaas, Raymond; Thiery, Valerie; Cadoret, Jean-paul; Picot, Laurent.
The glaucophyte Cyanophora paradoxa (Cp) was chemically investigated to identify pigments efficiently inhibiting malignant melanoma, mammary carcinoma and lung adenocarcinoma cells growth. Cp water and ethanol extracts significantly inhibited the growth of the three cancer cell lines in vitro, at 100 mu g.mL(-1). Flash chromatography of the Cp ethanol extract, devoid of c-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin, enabled the collection of eight fractions, four of which strongly inhibited cancer cells growth at 100 mu g.mL(-1). Particularly, two fractions inhibited more than 90% of the melanoma cells growth, one inducing apoptosis in the three cancer cells lines. The detailed analysis of Cp pigment composition resulted in the discrimination of 17 molecules, ten of...

Rol de las macroalgas en el biomonitoreo de la contaminación en «Marchica», la laguna de Nador Phyton
Ben Chekroun,K; Moumen,A; Rezzoum,N; Sánchez,E; Baghour,M.
The Aquatic system contamination by organic pollutants and heavy metals is one of the most serious problems that might face the environment and organisms as a whole. Interestingly, the accumulation of these pollutants is due to the anthropogenic activity, namely the intensive use of fertilizers to obtain high yields in crop production. In this paper, we compared the levels of chlorophylls, proteins, dry weight and sucrose in some red (Alsidium sp. and Gracilaria sp.) and green algae (Ulva sp.) collected from Mohandis, near Kariat and Bou Areg. Our results indicate that the algae collected nearby Bou Areg, an area well-known for its high agricultural activity, contained high levels of pigments, proteins and sugars. From the chlorophyll results, we conclude...

Sedimentation pathways in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean during a production regime dominated by regeneration ArchiMer
Cailliau, C; Belviso, S; Goutx, M; Bedo, A; Park, Y; Charriaud, E.
During summer 1994, the production regime at 2 sites located in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean, one in the Permanent Open Ocean Zone (POOZ) at 52 degrees S, and a second in the Seasonal Ice Zone (SIZ) at 63 degrees S, was dominated by regeneration (0.3 < f-ratio < 0.4). Two time series, each of about 4 d, were performed over pre-determined time intervals of 4 h using a free-floating sediment trap set at 200 m at the 2 sites. Hourly variations of C, N, chlorophyll a (chl a) and its degradation products, taxon-specific pigments, lipid classes and dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) were measured simultaneously. Measurements in the water column were done during the sediment trap drifting. Fucoxanthin, a typical diatom pigment, was the major...

Pigmentos carotenoides del camarón Artemesia longinaris Bate (Crustacea, Decapoda, Penaeidae) OceanDocs
Carreto, J.I.; Carignan, M.O..
Caronetoids from caparace and internal organs of Artemesia longinaris were isolated and identified. The following carotenoid pigments were found in caparace: luteine, tunaxanthin diester, astaxanthin monoester and free astaxanthin. A much greater variety of pigments was isolated from internal organs: Ó- doradexanthin, a fucoxanthin derivate, chlorophylls degradation products and various xanthophylls in trace amounts. These pigments are of dietary origin. In the natural environment, A.longinaris takes preformed astaxanthin from the diet and transfers it to body tissues.

Effect of cobalt on growth, pigments and the photosynthetic electron transport in Monoraphidium minutum and Nitzchia perminuta Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
El-Sheekh,M.M.; El-Naggar,A.H.; Osman,M.E.H.; El-Mazaly,E..
The unicellular green alga Monoraphidium minutum and the diatom Nitzschia perminuta were cultured under different concentrations of Co2+. Growth and pigment content were slightly increased at low concentrations and inhibited by high Co2+ concentrations. The results concerning the effect of different concentrations of Co2+ on photosynthetic O2 evolution showed a reduction in the amount of O2 evolved by each alga in response to increasing Co2+ concentrations. However, an increase in O2 evolution for both M. minutum and N. perminuta was observed at relatively low Co2+ concentrations. Photosynthetic electron transport in M. minutum was more sensitive to Co2+ toxicity than in N. perminuta. On the other hand, the effect of the heavy metal on respiration showed...

Phytoplankton composition in coastal lagoons of different trophic status in Northern Colombia determined by microscope and HPLC-Pigment analysis OceanDocs
Gocke, K.; Meyerhöfer, M.; Mancera P., J.E.; Vidal, L.A..
The regional differences in the composition of the phytoplankton assemblages in several coastal lagoons of the “Outer Delta of the Río Magdalena” (Caribbean coast of Colombia) were determined using microscopic counting and HPLC-pigment measurements. The study sites can be classified as 1) a group of limnic lagoons with relatively low (5.5-19 µg/l) chlorophyll a (chl a) concentrations and high inorganic suspension loading, 2) a group of brackish lagoons with high (62-90 µg/l) chl a concentrations and high amounts of organic seston, (two further lagoons form a transition between group 1 and 2, and 3) a fully marine Caribbean bay with very low (0.3 µg/l) chl a and seston concentrations. The regional variations in salinity of the lagoons are due to inflow of...

Nanoplastics exposure modulate lipid and pigment compositions in diatoms ArchiMer
Gonzalez-fernandez, Carmen; Le Grand, Fabienne; Bideau, Antoine; Huvet, Arnaud; Paul-pont, Ika; Soudant, Philippe.
The impact of nanoplastics (NP) using model polystyrene nanoparticles amine functionalized (PS–NH2) has been investigated on pigment and lipid compositions of the marine diatom Chaetoceros neogracile, at two growth phases using a low (0.05 μg mL−1) and a high (5 μg mL−1) concentrations for 96 h. Results evidenced an impact on pigment composition associated to the light-harvesting function and photoprotection mainly at exponential phase. NP also impacted lipid composition of diatoms with a re-adjustment of lipid classes and fatty acids noteworthy. Main changes upon NP exposure were observed in galactolipids and triacylglycerol's at both growth phases affecting the thylakoids membrane structure and cellular energy reserve of diatoms. Particularly,...

UV-B radiation as an elicitor of secondary metabolite production in plants of the genus Alternanthera Acta Botanica
Klein,Fátima Rosane S.; Reis,Andressa; Kleinowski,Alítcia M.; Telles,Renata T.; Amarante,Luciano do; Peters,José A.; Braga,Eugenia Jacira B..
ABSTRACT Ultraviolet B radiation has been described as a potential elicitor agent of the synthesis of secondary metabolites in plants. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the production of betalains and total flavonoids, as well as the antioxidant activity, of Alternanthera sessilis, A. brasiliana, A. tenella and A. philoxeroides exposed to different periods of UV-B radiation (280-315 nm). Plants of these four species were exposed to UV-B radiation for 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 hours, which amounts to 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 J cm−2 of radiation, respectively. Significant increases in betacyanin and betaxanthin levels were observed in A. sessilis and A. brasiliana during the period of UV-B exposure, while no differences were observed for the others species....

Diversity in Xanthophyll Cycle Pigments Content and Related Nonphotochemical Quenching (NPQ) Among Microalgae: Implications for Growth Strategy and Ecology ArchiMer
Lacour, Thomas; Babin, Marcel; Lavaud, Johann.
Xanthophyll cycle‐related non‐photochemical quenching, which is present in most photoautotrophs, allows dissipating excess light energy. Xanthophyll cycle‐related NPQ depends principally on xanthophyll cycle pigments composition and their effective involvement in non‐photochemical quenching. Xanthophyll cycle‐related NPQ is tightly controlled by environmental conditions in a species/strain specific manner. These features are especially relevant in microalgae living in a complex and highly variable environment. The goal of this study was to perform a comparative assessment of non‐photochemical quenching ecophysiologies across microalgal taxa in order to underline specific involvement of non‐photochemical quenching in growth adaptations and strategies. We...

Photo-protective compounds in red macroalgae from Brittany: Considerable diversity in mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) ArchiMer
Lalegerie, Fanny; Lajili, Sirine; Bedoux, Gilles; Taupin, Laure; Stiger-pouvreau, Valerie; Connan, Solène.
To cope with the biotic and abiotic stresses experienced within their environment, marine macroalgae have developed certain defence mechanisms including the synthesis of photo-protective molecules against light and particularly harmful UV radiation. The aim of this study was to screen selected red algae, a highly diverse phylogenetic group, for the production of photo-protective molecules. The pigment content and composition (i.e. chlorophyll-a, phycobiliproteins and carotenoids) and the composition of mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) were studied in 40 species of red macroalgae collected in Brittany (France), at two distinct periods (i.e. February and July 2017). A high inter-specific variability was demonstrated in terms of pigment content and MAA...
